RAIN Meditation
In the app: RAIN Guided Meditation
RAIN helps you work through a difficult emotion, unhook from being swept away by it, and meet it with more steadiness and self-compassion. It walks you through four steps, Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture, to process what you're feeling. Because it guides you into difficult emotions directly, take a settled moment before you start.
Naming an emotion and allowing it rather than fighting it reduces its grip, an effect sometimes called affect labeling, and investigating and nurturing it brings a self-compassionate steadiness that helps the feeling move through. You may feel the emotion intensify before it eases, along with vulnerability or relief, this is a normal part of letting something be felt. The components of RAIN, especially labeling and allowing emotion, align with research on emotional regulation and mindfulness-based approaches. RAIN is a modern mindfulness framework popularized by Western meditation teachers as an accessible way to work with difficult emotions. If staying with a hard feeling is difficult or you want to look away, that's completely understandable, you can go gently, one step at a time, and it gets more manageable with practice.
