Emotion Wheel

The Emotion Wheel helps you name what you're feeling with more precision, untangle mixed emotions, and understand yourself more clearly. It's a writing exercise where you use a wheel of emotion words to move from a vague feeling to the specific one underneath it.

Moving from a broad feeling to a precise one, affect labeling at a finer grain, gives the emotion shape and reduces its grip, which makes it easier to understand and work with. You may feel a click of recognition when you land on the right word, along with whatever that named emotion brings. Greater emotional granularity, being able to name feelings precisely, has been studied and linked to better emotional regulation. Emotion wheels were developed by psychologists mapping how core emotions branch into more specific ones, and are widely used in emotional-literacy work. If nothing fits at first, that's completely normal, the right word can take a moment, and precision comes with practice.
