NVC Reflection

NVC Reflection helps you understand what you're really feeling and needing in a charged situation, and find a clearer, less reactive way to ask for it. It's a writing exercise that moves through your feelings, the needs beneath them, and a possible request. Because it asks you to look honestly at painful or conflicted moments, give yourself a settled moment before you begin.

Separating what happened from how you feel and what you need cuts through blame and reactivity, which helps you see a situation more clearly and respond from need rather than upset. You may feel the sting of a conflict resurface, then a softening or clarity as you name the need underneath it. Nonviolent Communication aligns with research on emotional regulation and healthier conflict and relationship patterns. NVC was developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg as a framework for compassionate, needs-based communication. If it's hard to find the feeling or need, or you keep slipping into blame, that's completely normal, the framework takes practice, and even a rough attempt brings more clarity.
