Box Breathing

Box Breathing steadies you before or during stressful moments, quiets a racing mind, sharpens focus, and helps you settle before sleep. It's a steadying breath with four equal parts, inhale, hold, exhale, hold, each for the same count, like tracing the four sides of a box.

The equal counts and the held breaths slow your breathing rate and shift you toward the parasympathetic, rest-and-digest side of the nervous system, which eases heart rate and the feeling of urgency. If you lose track of the count, just pick it back up, there is no wrong way to do it. Slow paced breathing like this has been studied for lowering stress and sharpening focus, which is why it's so widely taught. It's often called tactical breathing, popularized in high-pressure work like the military and emergency response, where staying calm under stress is the job. If the practice feels a little awkward or hard to coordinate at first, that's completely normal, it becomes more natural the more you do it.

Your program picks one to three of these a day, in the minutes you have.
