ABC-DE Disputation
ABC-DE Disputation helps you challenge a self-defeating belief, weaken its grip, and find a more balanced way of seeing a situation. It's a writing exercise that moves from the Activating event, your Belief, and the Consequence, to Disputing the belief and a new Effect.
Laying out the event, the belief, and its emotional consequence shows that it's the belief, not the event, driving the feeling, and actively disputing that belief opens room for a steadier response. You may feel resistance as you question a belief you hold strongly, then some relief or openness as it loosens. This method comes from rational emotive behavior therapy and aligns with well-researched cognitive approaches to reframing unhelpful beliefs. The ABC model was created by psychologist Albert Ellis, a founder of cognitive therapy, with the disputing and new-effect steps added to work with the belief. If disputing a belief feels forced or it snaps back, that's normal at first, the point is to practice questioning it, and it gets more natural over time.
